Camping Tips
British Summers are notoriously tricky, one day it`s sunny, the next it`s pouring with rain. Usually Wimbledon with its strawberries and cream and tanned tennis players has a few days of rain somewhere along the way and we complain despite knowing that it`s the same every year. In fact, as soon as the sun comes out we tend to all rush to the beach or decide to go camping; which brings me to the point of this article. Here are a few important camping tips:
1. Do your research. It`s often not enough to just find a nice campsite with some good facilities because spending every day by the beach or in the forest could prove bland. Plan ahead and look out for places of interest or outstanding natural beauty which you could visit while you`re camping to make the stay more interesting and varied. You will find some activities near coastal resorts including wind surfing, diving, rock climbing and water skiing here in the UK so why not take advantage and enjoy some of the activities you might take part in abroad a little closer to home?
2. Plan some food. It doesn`t hurt to find out about BBQ restrictions before you go camping and also look into places worth eating in the area. All of this information is available online, you can even find out where the nearest supermarket is in advance. Imagine coming home and looking up where you`d just been online to find incredible restaurants and family beach barbeques which you missed while you were there!
3. Take a first aid kit. Thousands of people have accidents on holiday every year and there`s no need for you or your loved ones to be part of that statistic, take a first aid kit and keep a charged mobile phone with one member of your party at all times in case you need to call for an ambulance. You`ll also need sunscreen, bottled water to stay hydrated and if you`re cycling wear a helmet.
Top Campsites
A few of the UK`s top campsites include: 4 Acton Fields in Swanage, Dorset which is close to the legendary `Tom`s Fields` campsite but less crowded. Then there is 6 Stowford Manor Farm in Wingfield, Wilts which only has 20 pitches but has a lovely family run farm serving cream teas and La Rosa Murk Esk Cottage in Whitby, Yorkshire which is a carnival themed caravan site which is environmentally friendly, colorful and eccentric.
What to Wear
It`s important to prepare for all weathers when you go camping. You`ll need torches or lanterns, a cool box for food and plenty of warm clothes which you can layer up along with towels, bedding an outfit for swimming and some sun screen. Check out the shower and toilet facilities for any given campsite before you go. Another indispensible camping item is some good footwear and hiking boots such as the Keen Europe brand will last for several years of outdoor adventuring.
